POPs waste disposal

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are chemicals, such as some flame retardants, that do not break down and build up in the environment. Waste upholstered seating can contain them, so it must be kept separate and destroyed rather than landfilled or recycled.

Staying compliant

The rules, handled for you

  • Environment Agency guidance says waste upholstered domestic seating containing POPs must not go to landfill, be reused or be recycled.
  • POPs waste must not be mixed with other waste, and items should be kept intact where possible to avoid releasing the chemicals.
  • Businesses that produce or handle this waste must make sure it is sent for destruction.

Questions

POPs waste FAQs

What counts as POPs waste?

Waste upholstered domestic-type seating, such as sofas, armchairs, office chairs and upholstered dining chairs, should be assumed to contain POPs unless testing shows otherwise. This includes the foam, fabric and any leather or synthetic coverings.

Can you take POPs waste with a fridge or WEEE collection?

Yes. We keep it separate on the vehicle and send it down the correct destruction route.

Does non-upholstered furniture count?

No. Wooden or metal furniture with no upholstery, and items such as mattresses, carpets and curtains, are not covered by this guidance.
